It's happening all around the country...

Well, it's time to vote.  I am going to miss all those telephone calls from so many important people who wanted to talk to me...???  Not really!  Whomever takes on the concerns of the people in this country, as well as those around the world, is going to have a mighty overwhelming job.  Seems like we become more aware of the things that are wrong with our country during all the weeks of politicians sharing their 'wisdom' for curing those problems.

I wonder what would happen if they overwhelmed us with all that is 'right and good' in our nation.  I'm not being idealistic but you know, there are so many good people out there.  Last week our church sponsored the annual Harvest Dinner for the hot meals program.  The meal was prepared by area college students and members of the churches in the area helped serve and share a meal with over a hundred of those in our community that need just a little extra help.  It was an evening where everyone left feeling quite blessed.  And this is happening in communities all around the country.

Next Sunday is 'Servant Sunday' for our congregation.  We go out into the community rather than having the second service.   Members choose where they would like to be of 'service to others'.  And this is happening in communities all around the country.

For those of you who don't know my 'growing up' area in Minnesota, there was recently a large fire fueled by an abundance of dry grass and high winds.  Eleven homes were burned...and I know the folks in that town are digging deep into their pockets to help all who are hurting.  I am guessing that the people in this very small community know first hand what the folks are experiencing after Hurricane Sandy - help from people they don't even know.  And this is happening in communities all around the country.

I remember some time ago one of the national networks ended their nightly broadcast of generally 'bad news' with a special story demonstrating 'good news'.  It didn't take long before people began to notice and to look forward to the conclusion of the news...with something to smile about.  It's good to be reminded that good things are happening - in communities all around the country.

Our daughter teases me about making a 'new best friend' just by going to the grocery store.  An unexpected smile shared with someone unsuspecting often leads to an unexpected conversation.  Maybe we need to have more conversations in the grocery aisle rather than finding one thing or another about which to complain.
Maybe our politicians could give that some thought.  Surely it wouldn't hurt to talk to the party across the aisle.  Maybe an unexpected smile across the aisle would be just what is needed to begin a conversation that could eventually benefit people all around the country.  Who knows where that conversation could lead...if it works in the aisle of the grocery story with a complete stranger, it might work wonders for politicians who sound like our 'new best friend' during these weeks of politicking.  Who knows...it would sure be worth a try.

So don't forget to vote.  Pray that we all remember the importance of caring for each other...even when we don't agree.  I decided to get this blog going before election day...before I knew the outcome.    Hopefully, the people who are going to govern our nation are going to be open to finding a middle ground, a balance, a willingness to talk to each other.

Don't forget to smile at that unsuspecting person pushing the grocery cart in your aisle.  Who knows where a conversation might lead...

And now my husband and I are going to bring a decorated cookie treat to our grandson.  He is about to have his first haircut!  That might weigh in as a more memorable event than the election!  Just kidding...I think.

Blessings,
Corrine
