THE AUTUMN SEASON IS HERE...
Leaves that are turning colors, a chilly rain, evenings that get dark much too early, and digging out the long sleeves and jackets...autumn is here. There is something comfortable about this time of the year. Those days between 'too hot' summer and 'too cold' winter. Maybe 'cozy' is the word.
We have been doing some work in our house and as I have moved things around, I am once again reminded of my delight in gathering rocks from just about any place we have visited. Should you visit our home you will find rocks of all sizes and shapes in just about any kind of container, sitting just about anywhere.
Have you ever seen the carefully stacked rocks along hiking trails that are purposefully placed to help guide others on their journey. Rocks placed by someone who has traveled that path before the current traveler came along. Rocks that were stacked to mark a trail so that the people who follow will know that they are following the path as they should. Those who truly use these guide markers know the importance of placing these rocks only in places that will help those who come later. Creating these rock kearns in places where they will mislead the traveler can be dangerous...guiding someone on a path that might lead to a wrong turn.
I have been known to suggest that we take a 'short cut' that looks like it is going in the right direction. I have also not given proper attention to those obstacles on the path, ending up with muddy feet or a twist of the ankle that does not contribute to fun hiking. It seems faster sometimes to try a short cut but you know what...it usually isn't worth it.
Life is kind of like that. It's good to know a traveler who has gone on ahead. It's good to follow where someone else has gone...someone who can share the wisdom of the journey. But...it's also good to be the first one on the path, maybe becoming the guide for someone who looks to you for wisdom. Bottom line...both are helpful experiences in life.
I've become so much older than I used to be. Maybe that is what I have in common with 'rocks'. :) Please scroll farther down to view some of the interesting kearns we have seen on hikes. Remember, as we leave paths of wisdom for those who follow, our 'stack of rocks' needn't be so monumental. Bits and pieces of wisdom are good! And remember that those paths of wisdom others share with you might not always be 'right in our face', but rather examples. Quiet wisdom is good also.
I really do enjoy picking up, sorting through and bringing home what I think must be the most beautiful rocks ever! Considering my age, maybe I should begin to consider a plan to return this huge collection back to nature. :) Maybe tomorrow...Right now I am still enjoying a very creative and unique part of nature.
Thank you for sharing such delightful bits of wisdom. Here's one I found today (Yom Kippur) that makes me appreciate all the miracles you see and share... from Abraham Heschel about what happens when we forget to obey the Sabbath commandment...
